Who writes the website copy

Ask any agency what most often makes a project stall and the answer is always the same: we're waiting for the copy. Not the design, not the programming, not the approvals. The copy. And almost always because nobody said in advance whose job it was.

Why it stalls

Why it's the copy that stalls projects.

Not because it's hard, but because it's work nobody has set aside time for — neither in the schedule nor in their head.

Nobody said whose job it isThe quote says what will be done, but not who writes the copy. Each side assumes it's the other, and that comes out in week three.
It looks like a small taskEight pages of half a page each is half a day of writing. But it's half a day that never comes, because there's always something more urgent.
Waiting for inspirationWebsite copy isn't an essay. People wait to be in the mood for something that is really just answers to questions they've been asked a hundred times on the phone.
Three people approve itEach adds a sentence and removes one. After three rounds the text is longer and says less.
It's copied from a competitorIt's quick and it doesn't work: you get a site that sounds like all the others, and Google has already read that text somewhere else.
The design waits for the copyA design built around made-up text looks good and falls apart as soon as the real text arrives. That's why the work genuinely stops, not just on paper.

One afternoon

How to write it yourself.

It works because it doesn't require you to write. It requires you to talk — something you already do every day on the phone.

01

Start recording on your phone

And answer five questions out loud: what you do, for whom, what people ask you most often, why they choose you, and what the person should do next.

02

Talk as you would to a customer

Not the way things “are written on websites”. The best copy on business websites sounds exactly like a good phone conversation.

03

Have the recording transcribed

Your phone or a free tool turns it into text. The result will be ugly, and that's fine — the raw material is there.

04

Throw away the first three sentences

They're almost always a warm-up. The real answer starts after them.

05

Split it into pages

Everything you sell gets its own page. One file with everything in it isn't a website.

06

Hand it over to be shaped

To us or to anyone else. Shaping existing material takes a few hours; writing from scratch takes weeks.

Note

Six mistakes you see everywhere.

Remove just these six things and your copy immediately outperforms most business websites.

“We are a dynamic, fast-growing company”That sentence appears on thousands of websites and means nothing. Replace it with what you do and for whom.
You talk about yourself, not the customerA test: count “we” and “you” in the first paragraph. If “we” is clearly ahead, the copy is about you, not about the person reading it.
No prices and no hint of pricesYou don't have to publish a price list, but total silence makes half of people leave. Even “projects from” does the job.
Generic words instead of specifics“Quality and professionalism” is nothing. “We've worked on roofs since 2009 and give a ten-year guarantee on waterproofing” is something.
Not one name and not one photo from the workStock photos and no clients. One real project with your own photo convinces more than three paragraphs of adjectives.
It doesn't say what the person should doThey've read it, they agree — and then what? A phone number, a form or a button, clearly visible and on every page.

How long should the text on a page be?

Long enough to answer the question the person came with. For a service page, that usually means several screens, not two paragraphs.

Length on its own doesn't help. A page of a thousand words that say nothing is worse than three hundred that do.

Can I use AI for the copy?

As help with structuring — yes, and we do that too. As a substitute for what you know about your work — no.

Generated text sounds smooth and contains nothing the reader can't find anywhere else. That's exactly what makes it useless, both for people and for search.

What if I don't have photos of my work?

Then that's the first task, before the copy. A phone and half a day on site do more than the most expensive stock photos.

If it really can't be done, we say so and look for other proof — reviews, numbers, certificates, names of projects.

How much does it cost if you write it?

By scope, depending on the number of pages and how much material there is to start with. The interview takes about an hour of your time.

It almost always works out cheaper than a two-month project delay, which is the usual price of waiting.

Does the copy need to be “optimized for Google”?

It needs to be written for people and structured so that it's easy to understand — which Google benefits from automatically. Keyword stuffing has been doing harm for years.

The useful part of optimization is something else: one topic per page, a clear heading and the answer to the question in the first lines.

Say it out loud — we'll shape it.

If the copy is the only thing holding up your project, it's the easiest part to solve. Half an hour of conversation is enough to start.
