WordPress maintenance

WordPress ships updates almost every week — core, theme, plugins. Any of them can close a security hole or break something. The job of maintenance is to do the first without allowing the second.

Specifics

What's different about WordPress.

General maintenance applies to every site. These are the things specific to WordPress, and the ones most often missed.

Core, theme and plugins separatelyThree different sources of updates, each on its own schedule. Updating everything at once is the quickest way not to know what broke the site.
On a copy firstWe update a copy of the site, check the important pages and the forms, and only then roll it out to the live one.
Abandoned pluginsWe keep track of which of yours are no longer maintained by their author. They're a ticking time bomb, and they get replaced before they go off.
The databaseClearing out accumulated revisions, transients and leftovers from removed plugins, which otherwise bloat it over the years.
Admin accessLimiting login attempts, strong passwords, removing unused users.
PHP versionThe site should run on a supported version. An old PHP version is both slow and risky.
CachingConfigured properly — otherwise it either doesn't work or serves stale pages to visitors.
Backups off the serverIf the server is compromised, the backups on it are too. That's why we keep our own separately.

How much does WordPress maintenance cost?

The same plans as for any other site: from €40 a month for Basic, €70 for Extended and €140 for Full. Excluding VAT.

WooCommerce shops are quoted separately, because the scope is larger.

Can't I just switch on automatic updates?

You can, and for minor security fixes it's even sensible. The problem is with bigger theme and plugin updates — there, updating automatically sometimes breaks the site, and you hear about it from a customer.

The difference with maintenance is that someone checks the result and has something to roll the site back to.

How often do you update?

As planned, twice a month. When an update closes an actively exploited hole, we do it immediately, without waiting for the schedule.

Do you maintain sites built with Elementor or an off-the-shelf theme?

Yes. We don't use them when we build a site, but we maintain those too. We just say honestly that maintaining them is riskier, because the parts weren't written for each other.

If the site is overloaded with plugins, we'll suggest which can go at the first review.

What happens to the site if I cancel the plan?

It stays yours and keeps working. Only the work on it stops — updates, backups and monitoring.

You get the latest backup and all the access details, if you didn't already have them.
