WordPress or Shopify

The argument is usually fought on the wrong ground — which platform is “better”. For a Bulgarian shop, three far more boring things are decisive: the couriers, cash on delivery and who owns your shop.

Comparison

Eight real differences.

Ordered by how much they matter for a Bulgarian shop, not by how much they're discussed online.

CouriersEcont and Speedy have mature integrations with WooCommerce — choosing a pick-up office on a map, automatic waybills, status updates back. For Shopify it's more limited and usually goes through an intermediary.
Cash on deliveryIn Bulgaria, still a substantial share of orders. In WooCommerce it's standard practice; in Shopify it's possible but more awkward.
Monthly costsShopify has a subscription, plus a transaction fee if you don't use their payments. WooCommerce has no subscription, but there's hosting and sometimes paid extensions.
OwnershipWooCommerce is yours — the files and the database are with you. Shopify is renting: the shop lives with them and is hard to move.
Getting startedShopify gets going faster and with fewer decisions. WooCommerce needs setting up, but it's more flexible afterwards.
FlexibilityA non-standard requirement in WooCommerce is solved with code. In Shopify — with an app that has a monthly fee, if one exists at all.
MaintenanceShopify updates itself. WooCommerce needs regular care — a real cost that has to be factored in.
AccountingIntegrations with Bulgarian stock and accounting software are considerably more mature on the WooCommerce side.

Which is better for a Bulgarian shop?

In most cases WooCommerce — because of the mature integrations with Econt and Speedy, cash on delivery and Bulgarian stock and accounting software.

If you sell mainly abroad or want to launch within days with no non-standard requirements, Shopify is a sensible choice.

Which works out cheaper?

It depends on the time frame. Shopify has a lower entry threshold and a constant monthly cost. WooCommerce has a higher initial build cost and a lower monthly cost, but needs maintenance.

Over two or three years, WooCommerce usually works out cheaper, provided the shop is maintained.

Can I migrate from Shopify to WooCommerce?

Yes. Products and customers are transferred, the URLs change and every old one gets a redirect. That's a migration and is planned separately.

What about Magento and the others?

Magento makes sense for very large shops with complex logic and a team to maintain it. For a small or medium-sized Bulgarian business, it's almost always overkill.

Do you build shops on Shopify?

We work mainly with WooCommerce, and that's where we're strongest. If your project is clearly a Shopify one, we'll tell you so honestly and point you in the right direction.
